Solar panels use photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity. These are the same type of solar cell that is used in calculators and other small electronics devices, but they have been specially designed
for large-scale energy production on a rooftop or ground mount system. Most homeowners and businesses choose a rooftop mount. Many farms benefit from larger scale ground mount systems.
The process of the solar panels using photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight to electricity is called “The Photoelectric Effect”, which was first discovered by Albert Einstein in 1905. The energy from the solar panels go to a solar inverter that converts the power to AC electricity for your home. The excess electricity will go to the power grid which is how you get credits for the power that
your system produces or be stored in a battery for potential power outages or to use during high time of use billing.
The size of your solar panel system is directly related to your annual power consumption and the roof structure of your home. Your power consumption is measured in kilo watt hours (kwh) and is found on your power bill. You will see that you use a different amount of kwh each month based on the season so it is important to take a look at the annual total. Your roof structure can also play a large factor in determining the size of the total system. For example if you have a large south facing roofline you will have the best efficiency of your panels. If you have an east / west facing roofline you may need a few extra panels to get the same amount of electrical offset.
